Nigeria joins the world in marking World Food Day on October 16, 2026, with the theme 'Innovate Today. Nourish Tomorrow.' The day commemorates the establishment of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation in 1945. Nigeria's efforts to achieve food sufficiency have faced major setbacks since 2024 due to food imports, insecurity that has displaced farmers, production challenges, irregularities in food marketing, and frequent policy changes. In July 2024, the Federal Government announced a 150-day duty-free import window for selected food commodities to curb rising food inflation caused by changes in government policies on subsidies and foreign exchange.
