Former Senegalese president Macky Sall withdrew from the seven-person race to be the next UN secretary-general, a day after an informal UN Security Council poll produced no clear favourite. In a statement released on social media, Sall said he had noted the result of the poll and hoped to contribute to the emergence of a consensus candidate within the Security Council. He added that the results of different test votes indicated a choice favouring a candidate, perhaps female, from the Latin America-Caribbean region. A UN diplomat said all seven hopefuls had received a vote of discourage, effectively a veto, from a permanent Security Council member in anonymous informal polling.
