Chief of Army Staff Lieutenant-General Waidi Shuaibu visited Maiduguri, Borno State, amid tensions over the abduction of 78 school children in May. The parents of the abducted children had planned to protest in Abuja but postponed due to poverty and lack of transport fares. The children were abducted on May 15, 2026, from the Mussa and Lassa communities, the same day school teachers and students were kidnapped in Oyo State. While the Oyo victims were rescued, the Borno parents say they have been left to grieve in isolation.
