A Nigerian army patrol vehicle struck a landmine planted by Islamic State group-aligned jihadists near the border with Cameroon, killing eight soldiers, defence sources told AFP. The attack occurred in Borno State on Saturday, the same day army chief Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu was visiting Maiduguri following an earlier attack on a base that killed 15 soldiers and five anti-jihadist militia members. The troops were inspecting militia members clearing thickets along the highway outside Gamboru when their vehicle rolled over the mine and exploded. The sources blamed the attack on Islamic State West Africa Province, which is active in the area.
