A Nigerian army patrol vehicle struck a landmine planted by Islamic State group-aligned jihadists near the border with Cameroon, killing eight soldiers, defence sources told AFP. The attack occurred in Borno State on Saturday, the same day the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, was visiting Maiduguri over an earlier attack on a base that killed 15 soldiers and five anti-jihadist militia members. Troops were inspecting militia members clearing thickets along the highway outside Gamboru when their vehicle rolled over the mine and exploded. Jihadist violence in Nigeria, which erupted in 2009, has eased since its peak a decade ago but has been rising over the past two years.
