Nigeria has signed the Mutual Recognition Arrangement of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (CIPM MRA), joining nations with globally recognised measurement standards. The agreement was signed by Dr Ifeanyi Chukwunonso Okeke, Director-General of the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), at the 28th General Conference on Weights and Measures in France. Nigeria's admission as an Associate State of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures took effect on June 4, 2026, according to a statement by SON's Director of Corporate Affairs, Mrs. Ethan Talatu. The CIPM MRA is the framework through which national metrology institutes demonstrate the equivalence of their measurement standards and gain global recognition for calibration and measurement certificates.
