A Kenyan court has convicted pastor Paul Mackenzie of murdering 191 people, including 190 children, after he allegedly directed members of his religious group to starve themselves and their children to death to "meet Jesus." The BBC reported that 28 other leaders of the religious group were also convicted of murder. All defendants had pleaded not guilty, maintaining that nobody had been forced to die. Delivering an eight-hour judgement in Mombasa, Justice Diana Mochache said Mackenzie's followers regarded him as "Jesus's mouthpiece," and a co-accused testified that the pastor instructed followers to use violence against anyone who refused to fast.
