The Anambra State Police Command has stated that the heavy security presence at St. Faith's Anglican Cathedral in Awka during a church service led by suspended Archbishop Alexander Ibezim was intended to maintain law and order and prevent any breakdown of peace. Archbishop Ibezim was suspended by the Primate of the Church of Nigeria, Most Rev. Henry Ndukuba, who directed him to proceed on a six-month leave pending investigations into allegations against him and recent developments in the diocese. The Primate also barred Ibezim from officiating in any church activities during the leave period. The Bishop of Aguata Diocese, Rt. Rev. Samuel Ezeofor, was directed to oversee the diocese.
