The Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria (PSN) has called for stiffer penalties against manufacturers and distributors of counterfeit drugs, proposing a minimum fine of N25 million alongside prison terms of between five and 20 years. Speaking at a press conference ahead of the society's 99th Annual National Conference, PSN President Pharm. Ayuba Tanko Ibrahim urged the National Assembly to expedite the amendment of the Fake Drug Act. He said existing penalties, which in some cases are as low as N5,000 and N10,000, were inadequate to discourage offenders in the lucrative counterfeit drug business. The proposed amendment would prescribe a fine of not less than N25 million and imprisonment of not less than five years.
